Codex skills for Excel and Spreadsheets
Codex handles workbooks the way an analyst expects: formulas instead of pasted values, inputs kept apart from calculations, and openpyxl's cached-result traps spelled out. The skills cover formulas matched to your Excel version, VBA and Office Scripts, Python and Google Sheets pipelines, charts and pivot substitutes, and audits that report findings and change only a copy of the workbook.
Start with these 3
- CSV & Excel Data Ingest Every row loads typed or is quarantined Codex sniffs each incoming file with a bundled standard-library script, reads every column as text, then casts against an explicit schema so nothing is guessed. Rows that fail checks go to a quarantine with a reason, loads abort past a failure threshold, and file checksums make reloads idempotent. Works with pandas, Polars, DuckDB and openpyxl.
- Excel XLSX Spreadsheets Workbooks with live formulas that open clean Codex writes workbooks the way a financial analyst expects: inputs separated from calculations, formulas instead of pasted results, explicit number formats, Excel tables, frozen headers and validation lists. It knows that openpyxl stores formulas without results, avoids the data_only save trap, and runs a bundled standard-library audit for error values, uncached formulas and formula-injection text.
- Excel Formulas Formulas that survive missing keys and new rows Codex picks the right lookup or aggregation for the user's Excel version, writes formulas that handle missing keys, text numbers and duplicates on purpose, and explains each argument. When a formula breaks it traces the error with a cause table instead of wrapping it in IFERROR, and when formulas are written from Python it adds the _xlfn and _xlpm prefixes Excel needs.

Every Excel and Spreadsheets skill in one command
Installs these 10 into ~/.agents/skills/. Add --project after -- to install into the current repository instead.
The installer is a 104-line POSIX shell script. It fetches the skills you name from codexskills.dev and unpacks each into its own folder in your skills directory. No sudo, no telemetry, and every skill page shows the full SKILL.md first. Read install.sh

Will Codex use XLOOKUP if my team is on Excel 2019?
Excel Formulas asks which Excel the audience runs before writing anything: Microsoft 365 and Excel 2021+ have XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays and LET, while 2016 and 2019 get INDEX and MATCH instead, and LAMBDA needs 365 or 2024. It uses IFERROR only around a specific expected failure, since a blanket IFERROR(..., 0) turns a broken reference into a plausible zero. When formulas are written from Python it adds the _xlfn and _xlpm prefixes Excel needs.
Can Codex create a PivotTable in an .xlsx file with Python?
Excel Charts and Pivots says plainly that no mainstream open-source library creates a real PivotTable from scratch: openpyxl keeps existing ones but cannot author them, and XlsxWriter and ExcelJS do not support them. By default it writes a pandas pivot_table summary with a native chart bound to the cells. When users need to slice and re-pivot, it replaces the data behind a template workbook's PivotTable and sets it to refresh on open.
Is there a skill for VBA macros or Office Scripts?
Office Macros picks VBA for desktop work that needs the file system or UserForms, and Office Scripts for workbooks in OneDrive or SharePoint, unattended Power Automate runs or Mac users. Because it cannot open the VBA editor, it works from exported .bas, .cls and .frm modules and reads existing macros with olevba. Its macros never Select or Activate and read and write whole ranges as arrays.
How do I install all 10 Excel and Spreadsheets skills at once?
Pass every name to the installer in one command: curl -fsSL https://codexskills.dev/install.sh | sh -s -- csv-data-ingest xlsx-spreadsheets excel-formulas excel-charts-pivots spreadsheet-auditing spreadsheet-automation google-sheets-automation office-macros financial-modeling budget-tracking. Add --project right after -- to put them in the current repository's .agents/skills/ so your team gets them too.
Which Excel and Spreadsheets skill should I try first?
CSV & Excel Data Ingest is the closest fit for most Excel and Spreadsheets work. Mention it with $csv-data-ingest in a prompt to load it on purpose; after that, Codex picks it up on its own whenever a task matches.
